Movie Review -Alien: Covenant

IMG_20170323_0950491

Legacy, that is the one word that comes to mind when I think of Alien movies .I have been a fan  since the first one and it’s sequels and I have eagerly awaited the  sequel to the prequel “Prometheus”  .You usually do not have many reasons to say sequel to the prequel so let us absorb this a moment shall we. Hmm okay now that that’s done lets get into the review.I walked out of the theater not enjoying the film one bit , I think it is because I missed character of Ripley ( played famously by Sigourney Weaver )  in the original four film installments. I had a few days to ponder and replay the film in my head and yes it is exactly what I hoped for in a horror sci fi film.Sometimes you have to step back and look at things from a fresh perspective and that is exactly what this film does it makes you think about things. The best example is what if be build machines that are too smart . Will technology end the human race and will we become extinct like the dinosaurs . It is with these questions that we venture into the unknown void and search among the stars ( albeit in a fictional future .)

The plot is as follows and warning there are spoilers ahead.

Peter Weyland speaks with his newly-activated synthetic, who chooses the name “David” for himself, after looking at a replica of Michelangelo’s statue of the same name. Weyland tells David that one day they will search for mankind’s creator together.

Many years later, in 2104, the colonization ship Covenant is bound for a remote planet, Origae-6, with two thousand colonists and a thousand embryos onboard. The ship is monitored by Walter, a newer synthetic physically resembling the earlier David model. A sudden neutrino burst damages the ship, killing some of the colonists. Walter orders the computer to wake the crew from stasis, but the ship’s captain, Branson, dies when his pod malfunctions. As the crew repairs the damage to the ship, they pick up a radio transmission from a nearby unknown planet. Against the objections of Daniels, Branson’s widow, succeeding captain Oram decides to investigate, as the planet appears to be even better suited for colonization than Origae-6 and the crew is reluctant to return to their stasis pods after witnessing their captain’s demise.

An expedition team descends to the planet’s surface and tracks the transmission’s signal to a crashed Engineer ship. While on the surface, security team members Ledward and Hallett are inadvertently infected with alien spores. Karine, Oram’s wife, helps the rapidly sickening Ledward back to the lander, where pilot Tennessee’s wife, Maggie, quarantines them both inside the med-bay. A Neomorph bursts from Ledward’s back, killing him, then mauls Karine to death. Maggie tries to shoot the quickly growing creature but accidentally hits a gas tank, causing an explosion which destroys the lander and kills her. The Neomorph manages to escape to the planet’s surface while another such creature bursts from Hallett’s throat, killing him.

The two Neomorphs attack the remaining crew members and kill Ankor. The crew manages to kill one of the aliens before David, a survivor of the Prometheus mission, rescues the crew and leads them to a city full of Engineer corpses. David tells them that upon his and Dr. Elizabeth Shaw’s arrival at the planet, their Engineer ship accidentally released a black liquid bioweapon which killed the native population, and that the ship crashed in the ensuing chaos, killing Shaw. As the crew members attempt to radio the Covenant for help, the surviving Neomorph infiltrates the city and decapitates Rosenthal, who was separated from the others. David attempts to communicate with the creature and is horrified when Oram kills it. At Oram’s demand, David reveals that the aliens are a result of his experimenting with the black liquid to create a new species. He leads Oram to an incubation chamber and tricks him into being embraced by a facehugger, which implants Oram with an embryo. A Xenomorph soon erupts from Oram’s chest, killing him.

As the others search for Oram and Rosenthal, Walter confronts David after realizing that David had deliberately unleashed the black liquid upon the Engineers. David explains that he believes humans are on the road to extinction and should not be allowed to colonize the galaxy. When Walter disagrees, David disables him and captures Daniels, revealing to her that he also murdered Shaw and used her corpse for his experiments. Walter reactivates himself and fights David, allowing Daniels to escape while Lope is attacked by the facehugger. Cole saves Lope before they are ambushed by the now mature Xenomorph, which kills Cole. Tennessee arrives in another lander to extract Daniels, Lope, and Walter. They kill the Xenomorph before docking with the Covenant; however, Lope had been implanted with another Xenomorph, which bursts from his chest on the ship before quickly maturing and killing crew members Ricks and Upworth. With Walter’s help, Tennessee and Daniels corner the creature in the Covenant‘s airlock and flush it into space.

The Covenant resumes its trip to Origae-6, and the surviving crew re-enters stasis. As Walter puts Daniels under, she realizes that he is actually David, but is unable to escape her stasis pod before falling asleep. Alone, David regurgitates two alien embryos and places them in cold storage alongside the human embryos, before using Walter’s name to record a log stating that all crew members except Daniels and Tennessee were killed by the neutrino blast at the beginning of the film.

I do have to give credit to the cast and crew as they did an excellent job acting and the directing is top notch and I would give this film 3 out of 4 stars . We were informed  as the series unfolds it will back right up to the original film completing the story line and that will be one to write home about . Until next time …….

Jack Russell’s Great White Rocks Willoughby Rib Fest !

Jack Russell's Great White
Jack Russell’s Great White

Willoughby,Ohio- The  Willoughby Rib Fest was briefly a step back in time to a bygone era, when musicians wrote and played songs without the use of computers and auto-tune to the delight of fans. The mighty Capt. Jack Russell of Jack Russell’s Great White stopped by the rib fest with his band and proceeded to rock the house . The food and drink were flowing at the fest and fans were awaiting the music while storms threatened to ruin the fun but the rock gods high above said let there be rock and protected us from the weather.

Jack Russell's Great White
Jack Russell’s Great White

The set started of with ” All Over Now ” and continued for 13 more songs to make this a night to remember. The set consisted  of both classic tracks and some news ones off of the new release ” He Saw it Comin’ “including ” Sign Of The Times ” and ” My Addiction “. One of my favorite parts of the show is when Jack Russell explained how ” Save Your Love ” came about and made it on the record.

The evening started out with an inspiring performance from opening act Levon , a trio from Nashville, TN. DIAMOND HEAD to perform in Columbus, OH next week !

unspecified
DIAMOND HEAD TO TOUR THE STATES WITH FIRST-EVER U.S. FESTIVAL APPEARANCES
One of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, Diamond Head, will be returning to the States for tour dates in May and in August. From May 17-27, the band – led by co-founding member/guitarist Brian Tatler – will be playing headline shows (and two dates with Ross the Boss, as well as a performance at the Legions of Metal Festival in Chicago with Armored Saint, and an appearance at Rocklahoma in Oklahoma). And then from August 19-25, Diamond Head will return to the US for another festival appearance (Psycho Vegas 2017 in Las Vegas), as well as additional headlining gigs.
“Excited to be back in the US this spring, playing songs from the new album ‘Diamond Head’ along with many classics from Lightning To The Nations, Borrowed Time & Canterbury’.” -Brian Tatler, 5/4/17
As part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, Diamond Head came up in the same scene as eventual global headliners Def Leppard and Iron Maiden. And while Diamond Head did not achieve the same commercial success as the aforementioned bands, they did influence countless subsequent musicians – especially Metallica, as it was a then-teenaged Lars Ulrich that befriended the band early on and became a major fan. Subsequently, Metallica has covered such Diamond Head classics as “Am I Evil,” “Helpless,” “The Prince,” and “It’s Electric” multiple times – on multiple platinum releases.
In addition to performing these classics at their upcoming U.S. shows, expect to also hear material performed off their latest release – 2016’s self-titled offering. Their seventh studio albums overall, the album has become one of their most critically acclaimed of their entire career – as evidenced by Classic Rock Magazine saying, “It just fu*kin’ rocks in glorious timeless fashion” and Metal Hammer simply adding, “This is rather excellent.”
And soon, many U.S. fans will get to see the legendary Diamond Head on a nearby concert stage.
“When we made ‘Kill Em All’, it was just Diamond Head and Motörhead”
Lars Ulrich – Metallica
“We’re a combination of the two heads, Diamond Head and Motörhead. The epic feel is definitely from Diamond Head, while the simplicity came from Motörhead.”
James Hetfield – Metallica
“I’m influenced by the likes of Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page and Brian Tatler”.
Dave Mustaine – Megadeth

Movie Review-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-posterHollywood ,California – The long anticipated sequel arrived in  theaters  this past weekend and movie geeks and movie goes in general could not have been happier  .I thoroughly enjoyed this romp thru the galaxy and being  reacquainted  with old friends and foes  and even some new ones. I  rarely  get to say this often but I enjoyed it more then the first film . The  character  development was well thought out and very organic which made for a  smooth transition as the sequel progresses. The acting was top notch and had some surprising cameos in the film as well.I honestly believe this very well might be the movie of the summer albeit a little early.Japan was lucky as they had a chance to see if before it was released in the US but sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for .

Here is a brief description  and synopsis without giving anyway to many details or spoilers as people like to say .   Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the fifteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, and Kurt Russell. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Guardians travel throughout the cosmos as they help Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.

Michael Rooker
Michael Rooker

I had the fortunate opportunity to meet  Michael Rooker last year and found him to be charming and pretty laid back . This is one film I suggest you see in the theater as in opposed to waiting for the blue ray , its thats good ! Until next time true believers .

FOGHAT ANNOUNCE BIG PLANS FOR 2017

unnamed

Fans of one of classic rock’s all-time great acts, Foghat, have a lot to look forward to this year, the 40th anniversary of Foghat’s Double Platinum album FOGHAT LIVE!  To celebrate the occasion these veteran rockers are releasing LIVE AT THE BELLY UP yet another great live performance from last year’s show at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, California. And for the 2017 tour these road warriors will be playing the entire 1977 LIVE album in their set to continue the party!

Always known for their dynamic live shows, a ‘live’ record is just what the doctor ordered to capture the onstage energy and sheer fun that these guys have on stage! Formed in 1971 in London, England, Foghat has amassed eight gold records, one platinum, and one double platinum record. They’ve scored hits with the songs “Slow Ride,” “Fool for the City,” a cover of “I Just Want to Make Love to You,” “Stone Blue” and “Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool),” all of which are still in regular rotation on classic rock radio.

2016 was a fantastic year for the band as their studio album UNDER THE INFLUENCE was released both on Vinyl and CD to great acclaim. And now, in 2017, fans of one of classic rock’s all-time great acts, Foghat, have not only a new live release to look forward to but also a very healthy and interesting tour schedule!

LIVE AT THE BELLY UP, issued in February digitally (http://bellyuplive.com/shows/foghat/545), will drop on June 30th on Foghat Records as a CD version.

In anticipation of the June 30th physical release, Foghat is launching a campaign through PledgeMusic for fans to pre-order the CD along with exclusive “Foghat LIVE at The Belly Up” custom merchandise and experiences for purchase.

http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/foghat-live-at-the-belly-up

Recorded on August 11, 2016, LIVE AT THE BELLY UP, opens with the one-two punch of “Fool For The City” and “Eight Days on the Road” and doesn’t let up until the last note of the raucous 10 minute, no-holds-barred set closer “Slow Ride.”  The set list is a solid representation of the band’s body of work to date. Three tracks from  “Under The Influence” make their live recording debut as well, “Under The Influence,” “Knock It Off,” and “Hot Mama.” According to lead singer Charlie Huhn, “The band just wants to make sure that after every show, fans are convinced they just got rocked, from the second we start the first song to the end of the show.” LIVE AT THE BELLY UP proves that Foghat is delivering on that commitment.
