Retro Vinyl Review- Rick Wakeman – Journey To The Center of The Earth

To be honest I am new to the world of vinyl, I didn’t own a record player when they were in style . I would go to the record store and look at the beautiful records with their amazing graphics and pictures and pick up a cassette version of the release . They were small and the art work was lost in translation to the medium but I always admired records . With that in mind I had starting to buy records in the last few years albeit with out a way to play them . I broke down and bought my first turn table last week and have been turning vinyl  every day since then .

I grew up in the 80s so I was a big British invasion MTV , hair metal kind of guy so I never knew the magic and wonder of the 70’s music scene . Recently I had the chance to watch  and listen to the music of YES featuring Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman and was immediately blown away . I was hooked instantly .While perusing my local record store I came upon an early release of Rick Wakeman . I had to buy it and listen to it and   I am  glad I did .

Rick Wakeman -Journey To The Center of The Earth is a musical adventure thru time and history , to the land of wonder and adventure .The album tells the tale of Professor Lidenbrook and his adventures with his nephew Axel to the center of the earth and the the wonders and dangers that follow . The albulm is inspired and based off the the Jules Verne classic of the same name . The music is chilling and powerful and  was recorded live with the London Symphony  Orchestra and   The English Chamber Choir . This was long before the days of computers and sampling . Rick and the rest of the musicians had to get it right and know their  craft and the talent shows in the recording . This was done in  1974 and yet is is not dated as it is timeless as the music of Grieg for whom Rick borrowed a few bars from him .

I highly recommend this is you are a fan of fantasy , classic music or the music of YES .You will not be disappointed and to Rick thanks for putting out such a stellar piece of music .

I worked a few years ago with the Howe, Squire version so I was extremely excited to finally see this incarnation of the band. The version that recorded one of my favorite songs   ” Owner of a Lonely Heart ” and truth be told they did not disappoint one little bit .

The night started with ” Cinema ” and continued for the next hour and half . Some of the tracts they played were ” Hold On ” and ” Ive Seen All Good People ” and ”   Rhythm of Love  ” just to name a few . During ” Owner of Lonely Heart ” both Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman came down the aisles to shake hands and greet the fans in an up close and personal way. By pure luck and circumstance I ended meeting Rabins very gracious wife who I asked to deliver a message . Please tell her husband how much I love his film scores and ” Con Air ” is one of my favorite albums of his. Rick Wakeman commanded the stage like a wizard behind a sea of keyboards and vocalist extraordinaire Jon Anderson provided impressive vocals , harp skills and some nice  rhythm  guitar   along with command of the stage .

The song that broke thru and made YES who they are today was ” Roundabout ” . The song takes me back when I was a kid and watched my older brother teach himself the entire song on a twelve string acoustical guitar . The band did an outstanding version to the standing room only crowd as not a person was in their seats for this one .

Since reuniting for a U.S. tour in 2016, YES featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman have performed sold-out shows in Israel, the UK, Belgium and Holland, and have a Japanese tour scheduled for April. Due to public demand, they return to tour the U.S. again from August 26th through October 11th. In addition to the tour dates, the trio will be recording new material throughout the summer for a projected album release of early 2018. Also upcoming is a DVD that was filmed at the final UK show of their recent European tour (at Manchester Apollo, on March 25th), for release later this year. And to the delight of longtime YES fans, all three were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame on April 7th.

The most successful prog rock group of all time, YES, was co-founded by Jon Anderson and the late Chris Squire in 1968 and went on to sell millions of units with releases such as Fragile, Close to The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Going For The One and 90125, as well as embarking on several record-breaking world tours.

Whilst Rick is predominantly associated with the ’70s “prog era” of the band (which saw YES become a worldwide stadium headliner) and Trevor associated with the ’80s “pop era” of the band (which furthered the band’s popularity – including the band’s biggest chart success), Jon is the bridge between both factions (as he was a member of both eras). The touring band line-up is completed by two extraordinary musicians – Lee Pomeroy on bass and Louis Molino III on drums – who help to ensure that YES’ immaculate artistic legacy remains intact.

The worldwide tour with YES featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman is being produced by renowned concert promoter Larry Magid, who is considered an architect and leader of the modern concert business. With over 17,000 concerts and live events to his credit and still counting, he has produced national and international tours for YES, Billy Crystal, Richard Pryor, Bette Midler, Stevie Wonder, Robin Williams, Gladys Knight, The Isley Bros., Earth Wind & Fire, ARW, Il Divo, The Allman Brothers Band, Patti LaBelle, Grover Washington Jr. and many others. In 1985 Larry Magid, co-produced the American portion of Live Aid, and in 2005, he was the American producer of Live 8. In 2001, he produced the United We Stand concert at RFK Stadium to benefit the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.
